Paes-Zimonjic out of US Open, Bhupathi ahead
NEW YORK: India's Leander Paes walked off the Louis Armstrong stadium court at the US Open on Wednesday night disappointed. The fifth-seeded pair of Paes and Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic crashed 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (1-7) to the little-known American team of Amer Delic and Jeff Morrison in the first round of the men's doubles competition.
"This has always been a great venue for me," Paes said after the pair had played two appaling tie-breaks. "I was the finalist here last year and we were seeded fifth this time. Once again we came up short in the tie-breaks. We are doing extremely well coming into that stage of the game. The difference is very little really as the scoreline will tell you."
After Wednesday's match Paes and Zimonjic took their tie-break losing tally in the American circuit to five -- and in four of those they led with mini breaks. But none was glaring than the first set tie-break advantage the duo enjoyed at the US Open. They led 4-1 and then bungled. The second was straightforward in that they were outplayed.
